Demonstration of Value of Helmets
I & colleague will be telling my recovery story about the harm imposed due to not wearing a helmet in 1977 at the age of 12. I missed both the Olympics – diver & US Air Force – pilot. I’ve achieved two college degrees, but no one will allow to work in Arkansas. I have headaches, poor balance/coordination & fall often, slurred speech, sensitive hearing, poor control of temper, difficulty in learning in school, no employment or career with retirement like the Arkansas Department of Rehabilitation promised in 1993, shaky legs, 58 additional blows to the head, financially poor, poor memory, etc.
can’t drive, a bother to friends, etc.
We activate, demonstrate, educate, initiate, motivate, stimulate, & validate that some cognitive challenges (negative educational self-fulfilling prophecy defined as brain injuries) can be conquered in time! We know humans are to be respected with humane terms not negatively defined terms like those in the disability environment like injured, disabled, retarded, etc. Cognitively challenged, differently-abled, etc., are more humane terms, reinforced by the linguistic intelligence of Harvard in the book The Unschooled Mind, which “Challenged Conquistadors, Inc.” has been referenced by Southern Arkansas University Professor Emeritus Ida Flemister. Use your brain for wisdom, when riding bikes, ATV’s, horses, etc., thus wear helmets! When you have optimism of yourself, you can believe achieve receive success, like Mr. Best! These BARS are freeing for my mind vs. the captivity like the bars of a prison of an institution/nursing home, which many have desired for myself for decades! We work to raise positive awareness that our disabilities have become challenges that we’ve conquered.
