The UN-WHO World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims was commemorated on Sunday, November 17, as part of the UNITED ’24 International Conference, co-hosted by Believers Church Medical College Hospital (BCMCH) and the National Resource Centre for Non-Communicable Diseases (NRC-NCD). The event, held at the Believers Convention Centre in Thiruvalla, Kerala, India, featured a series of impactful activities, including a Commemorative Public Function, an Awareness Exhibition on Road Safety, and a Candlelight Vigil attended by both national and international dignitaries.
The Commemorative Address was delivered by Dr. Mohammed Asheel, National Professional Officer for Injuries, Disabilities, Assistive Technology, and Rehabilitation at WHO-India. The solemn Candlelight Vigil was led by Ms. Agna Mariamma Abraham, PMR Ambassador of BCMCH and an inspiring advocate for road crash survivors.
The other distinguished participants included Dr. Mohammed Asheel (WHO-India), Prof. Dr. Marc Rosenthal (Clinical Professor, Emergency Medicine, Wayne State University), Prof. Dr. Vinod Chandra Menon (Regional Director – Asia, TIEMS, Oslo; Founder Member, NDMA, Govt. of India), Dr. C. Jayakumar (Additional Professor, NIMHANS, Bangalore), Mr. Shankara Pandiyan (Assistant Commandant, NDRF), Prof. Dr. Geomcy George (Medical Superintendent, BCMCH), Mrs. Sudha Mathew (HR Head, BCMCH), Dr. Thomas Mathew (Senior Consultant, PMR, BCMCH), Mr. Johnson J. Edayaranmula (Executive Director, NRC-NCD) and Ms. Abini Treesa Babu (NRC Coordinator).
Hundreds of stakeholders participated in the Candlelight Vigil, holding lighted candles as the poignant sounds of sitar instrumental music filled the venue, creating an atmosphere of reflection and hope.
The event emphasized the importance of road safety awareness and support for road crash victims, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees.
