Bike Durham, the City of Durham, and Durham-Chapel Hill Carrboro MPO will host an event for World Day of Remembrance for road crash victims.

What: This Sunday, November 17 is recognized as the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. This year, Bike Durham, the City of Durham, and the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization will host a gathering in recognition of this day here in Durham. The program is:
2:00p Engagement activities for the regional Vision Zero Action Plan at the Raynor Street bus stop
3:00p Remarks inside the POOF Teen Center by Gregory Williams of Bike Durham, Lauren Grove of City of Durham, Council member Javiera Caballero, Mel Downey-Piper of American Heart Association, and a representative of the Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee
4:00p Visit to newly completed safe street conversion and protected bike lane on N. Miami Blvd
4:15p Candlelight vigil with reading of names and dates of traffic victims
4:30p Conclusion of event
On this Sunday we will gather at the POOF Teen Center to remember the thirty-seven individuals who have died in road crashes in Durham since last November, and the many more who have been injured. Of those killed, eight were pedestrians and one was riding his bicycle. (Data provided by NCDOT through October 27, 2024 plus news story of pedestrian struck and killed on November 10, 2024).
Call to Action: Bike Durham will also call for the following actions to be taken:
City Council to continue fare-free GoDurham transit to improve access to mobility for all,
City staff to take steps to speed up the delivery of street safety projects, and
NCDOT to be a full partner with the City of Durham in achieving our Vision Zero goals, including permitting the two-way conversion of high-speed one-way corridors like Mangum and Roxboro.
